The Hamptons: Bikini Scenes
Posted by Michael Kellaway on June 19, 2012
The Location
Hidden among the twee town names and idyllic, rustic beaches lies the true nature of The Hamptons that have made it the natural choice for impossibly glamorous stories, from The Great Gatsby to Royal Pains - a carefully studied and perfected carefree attitude that will make you hunger for more.
The geography of the Hamptons will tell you everything you need to know about where to go: the North Fork is a no-no; the South Fork is a must-do; any beach with “Main” in the name should be on your list; anything with “Hollow” should be avoided. And forget Shelter Island altogether, darlings.
The Hamptons are a true playground of the rich and powerful, and angling to get a coveted bed in a friend’s summer rental is the winter pastime of New Yorkers in the know. If you want to be part of the mother of all scenes, bring your A-Game, your MINX bikini and get out to the Hamptons any way you can - even if you can’t afford to beat the traffic via private helicopter.
The Scene: Day
Your first stop should be Sagg Main Beach, where the party literally never stops - you’ll be in your sexy bikini from morning ‘til night, and you’ll spend hardly any time at all on your towel as you drift from party to party. Flying Point Beach has less of a Spring Break vibe, and more trust-funders than you can shake a Burberry umbrella at. The young and restless, bold and beautiful all meet here to see and be seen.
Gibson Beach is where you want to wear your absolute favourite sexy MINX bikini - even if it’s just the bottoms, as this is a topless-optional beach. And bring your sunglasses so you don’t have to let all the A-listers know you’re staring openly at them. If celebrities aren’t your scene and you want to go where the old-money crowd is, then head over to Wainscott Beach. Sporty types should park their beach chairs on the surfing beach at Ditch Plains, out in Montauk, or Main Beach, which is closer to the rest of the Hamptons action.
The Scene: Night
The hottest spot, by far, is the Day & Night Restaurant Beach Club in Southampton. Yes, it sounds like an outdoor grill - and for much of the summer, it is. But weekends host the Day & Night Brunch, which is a party that starts about brunch time, goes all night long, and is frequently the place where Wall Street guys spend absurd amounts of money buying magnums of wine and champagne for themselves, friends and strangers. This is where summer memories are made - or at least hazily remembered. Your MINX bikini is highly recommended attire because you’ll probably be pulled into the pool at some point.
South Pointe is also in Southampton, and while not as wild as Day & Night, then at least as fun. This former RdV East location is still the top place for celebrities of every type to hang with mere mortals in this enormous venue. Lily Pond in Easthampton takes exclusivity to a new level with private party lunges, and AXE Lounge - yes, sponsored by the shower gel - is actually an excellent place to spend quality time with your favorite celebrities.
And this list doesn’t include the many five-star charity functions, polo matches and private lawn and pool parties that make the Hamptons seem like Manhattan, but with more sea, sun, skin and sand. Keep alert on the Hamptons Jitney, which leaves from Midtown on Fridays, to hear about what’s happening every weekend.
Other Top Spots
Of course, no one can party all the time. If you’re looking for a more relaxed time this summer, there are plenty of Long Island wineries, markets, sea sports and cultural events to never be bored. And if you’re not near any of the scene beaches, not to worry - your MINX bikini will look fabulous no matter where you place your towel!
